Distraction Ideas in Case Your Adoption is Crawling Along at a Snail's Pace

Is your adoption crawling along at a snail's pace? Mine is! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

One referral in May? Seriously? Really? One?!? If this referral rate continues we're going to be waiting a long, long, long time for Roary's friend to come home. Fifteen more years, actually. That's what my computer calculater just told me.

I've had a few things going on that have been nice distractions.

1. I declared a war on dandelions. It developed into a bit of an obsession, actually. At first I was cursing my neighbours for letting their bazillion dandelion seeds float into my unsuspecting yard. Then it became quite therapeutic. Check adoption sites for referral news, furiously yank out dandelions. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. I even bought one of those dandelion puller-things from Canadian Tire. It's pretty sweet. Totally worth the 25 bucks. I'd get one if I were you.

2. I tried my hand at a green thumb. I planted, weeded, fertilized, and watered. Things are growing. They're growing!!!!!!!

3. I joined a women's soccer league. Here's the catch, I've never played before. Except that one time in grade 7 when we had an exhibition game against another school and I had no idea what was going on. Oh wait, I still have no idea what's going on. I'm like a little lost puppy running around on the field. But I do have shinpads. And cleats. If you saw me in my gear you might think I was a soccer player. My goal is to be MVP by the end of the season. I'll let you know how that goes.

4. I bought a jumbo box of fudgesicles. 30. They're almost gone.

5. I've been reading Race Against Time by Stephen Lewis. At first I was a bit overwhelmed by it, but then I got my groove on. Now I know all about the CIDA and the DAW and the IMF. I'm on page 129. Woooooo!

And that's that. If you're wondering how I have time to take pictures of fudgesicles and cleats, it's because I should be starting my report cards tonight. Whoops.

  1. Your posts make me giggle...!

I too should get my butt off this chair and start doing report cards. Sheesh, I only just did my taxes last night, so I wouldn't want to peak too soon! Way to go joining the soccer team. You couldn't pay me to run around in the BC rain for 90 minutes, getting hot, sweaty and mucky, but that's just my delicate nature (LOL)

One referral a month sucks, and I would love to know if they are planning on rectifying this situation. How long are we supposed to wait out this 'temporary' ban before they decide to partner with more orphanages?? Ugh, it is so frustrating!

  2. Thanks for the post - so true with the waiting distractions and all. I have no interest in soccer, but have a bizarre idea that I must aquire a road bike (we live in a rural small town...lots of biking to be done out here) and take that up. Uh huh. So far, road bikes cost too much, but I haven't given up. Definitely consuming chocolate and ice cream products, although I likely can't blame the adoption wait on that little habit. Reading a ton (lots of novels, and lots of adoption books), and neglecting my gardens BADLY - thankfully my peonies will bloom whether I tend them or not. Oh, and camping on weekends - that most assuredely makes time fly by...almost too fast.

  3. Last year I distracted myself by training and running my first full marathon; however, I just can't seem to get motivated to do much this year - I'll be lucky to be ready for the 1/2 marathon if anything. Any distraction you can find - take it and milk it for everything it is worth...

P.S. You have been on my mind lately - not sure why, but thought I would let you know that someone is thinking about you!

  4. Claire - I think I may be a bit too delicate (or clumsy) for soccer, too. :S

April - We are with Imagine Adoption in Ontario.

Joy - Go for the bike!!!!

Laura - Thanks for thinking of me. Honestly, I check the boards every single day to see if you got your referral. Rooting for you from way over here. :)

  5. Huh. We could be friends. I love my dandilion puller and am quite diligent about attacking the yard, am loving watching the garden grow, and have vowed to stop buying revellos because I can't stop consuming them. Thankfully I bought out the store and then ate them, and the store hasn't restocked. I totally hear you about the pace of referrals. Painfully PaiNFuLLY slow. I'm actually considering changing my request to help with the speed. As for report cards? I don't even want to think about them! I need to get a move on or I'll have one mighty stressful end-of-year. Summer's on it's way though. And everything is better in summer (although admittedly last summer had its stresses -- but this one HAS to be better!).
